An Introduction to the British and American Constitutions - Prüfungsnummer: 9958450

By a constitution we most commonly mean a document like the German Grundgesetz which defines the workings of the organs of the state and lays down the fundamental basic law on which all other law is built. The American constitution was the first such document in human history, and was therefore radically innovative. All over the world, democracies have been modelled on the American experiment. However the British constitution is of a different sort, and is far older: it is a consensus-based collection of customs and practices which may look chaotic, but works, because it has always worked. In this course we will study both of these, reading original documents and hearing authentic voices. The course will be taught through the medium of English, so reading comprehension at the level C1 is a recommended prerequisite. While the course will give participants the opportunity to polish their English skills, it is not a language course, and the exam will be graded solely on content.
