Scotland may be a small country, but it is an important European neighbour, and not only because Germans love to holiday there. Since the Enlightenment, Scottish scholars and thinkers have been very influential in European culture, and the Scottish economy is strong in such areas as energy, manufacturing (shipbuilding, textiles, whisky), and financial services. This course will offer an introduction to Scottish history, culture, and institutions. Obviously, we will learn about the tartan culture, but also about life in modern Scottish society. We will also look at some aspects of contemporary Scottish politics, especially Brexit and the independence movement. The course will be taught mainly in English (level B2), though questions and explanations in German are always possible.
