FraME 2025: Fractional Models in Engineering

Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme on Fractional Calculus and its Applications in Physics and Engineering

Fractional calculus, i.e. the mathematical discipline dealing with integrals and derivatives of arbitrary (not necessarily integer) order, is a field of mathematics that is almost as old as classical differential and integral calculus itself. Initially having been of interest only in a pure mathematics context, it has turned out in the last few decades that these mathematical concepts can be used very successfully for modeling and analyzing many processes in physics and engineering such as, e.g.,

  • anomalous diffusion processes (super- and subdiffusion),
  • stress-strain relationships for viscoelastic materials,
  • dielectricity,
  • acoustics,
  • control theory,
  • electrical circuits.

This Blended Intensive Programme aims to bring together master students, Ph.D. students and Postdocs with a background in one of the related fields. Experienced lecturers from all mentioned areas will provide their expertise and teach the students about the fundamentals of fractional calculus, the relation to physics, diverse applications and the associated interconnections.

Dates

Like all Blended Intensive Programmes, FraME 2025 comprises two phases. In the first phase (February 10 – February 21, 2025), all participants will meet face-to-face at the Politecnico di Bari in Italy for a series of lectures, discussions, and practical exercises. The second phase (March 03 – April 30, 2025) is a virtual collaboration phase where students are expected to work together via the internet on carefully chosen projects.

ECTS Credits

Upon successful participation in the programme, judged by the outcomes of the projects of the virtual phase, 5 ECTS points will be awarded.

Financial Support

Like with all BIPs under the Erasmus+ scheme, students and Postdocs from the Erasmus+ programme countries (all EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Turkey) except for the host country Italy are eligible for a reimbursement of their travel and accommodation expenses for the face-to-face teaching phase. These students should contact the International Office at their home university to make the necessary arrangements.
Unfortunately, we are unable to provide financial support for participants from other countries.

Registration

Prospective participants are kindly requested to register at this website no later than by November 30, 2024. The programme has a capacity of at most 30 students. When this quota has been reached, the registration website will offer the opportunity to place your name on a waiting list. If registered students cancel their participation (which is also possible via the registration website), students from the waiting list will be promoted.
