Research in the Department of Mathematics and Physics
The research of the FANG Department of Mathematics and Physics focuses on applied computer science, mathematics and physics. Each research focus is represented by a lab. The members of the Department are involved in industry projects and are networking with research institutions around the world.
Lab for Mathematical Methods in Computer Vision and Machine Learning
The research focus is the solution of mathematical problems occuring with Computer Vision and Imaging. The focus of application is segmentation and reconstruction problems. The methodological focus comprises of variational methods, non-convex optimisation and machine learning.

Lab for Microscopic Modelling of Materials Properties and Processes
The lab is working towards creating theoretical understanding of general porpoerties of complex fluids and solids.
Contact person: Prof. Dr. Bier
Numerical Simulation Lab
The lab is concerned with numerical simulation and optimisation of processes in nature and technology. The numeric calculation of electromagnetic fields is especially relevant for the development of many technical products like electric engines, generator, magnet valves, batteries and isolators.

Lab for Programming and its Application in Mathematics
This lab focuses on the programming of algorithms relevant to solving mathematical questions.
Contact person: Prof. Dr. Bodewig
Technical Mathematics Lab
The research of this lab focuses on modelling, analysis and simulation of phase separation processes and damage processes resulting from industrial problems.
Contact person: Prof. Dr. Kraus
Technical Optics Lab
The research of this lab focuses on optical measurement technology and sensor technology.
Contact person: Prof. Dr. Seufert
Scientific Computing Lab
Based on relevant mathematical models and algorithms, this lab researches computational simulation of technical or scientific processes.
